REQUIEM

There was a full moon,
A clean, gold hole
Cut in the sky....

November 1999

ICE

The river is freezing.
The trees stand in the snow
Like unburied skeletons.
The road is icy and goes nowhere.
In the distance.
The headlines of a car,
Bright yellow,
Like fire flies....

MONKS

It is no small thing to wake up
And find tiny brown monks
Suspended from the branches of pines....

ELEGY IN SPRING
AND FALL AND SPRING

Today,
I learned you were dying.
Why did I think
I never loved you?...

A SHORT HISTORY OF LOVE

My lover had a white map on his body.
White mists, white clouds,
White sails. Erased.
He drifted away....

THE HOUSE OF THE SUN

In The House of the Sun,
The light is so bright

The eye never opens wide.
Everything here is bleached by the light;
There is no color but gold.

The air is gold. The air is solid.

Everywhere you look,
The face of the immobile saint....

WISHES FOR A WEDDING

These are some of the white things:

The spider's web that weaves and welds itself
Between the post and the door to the warm house,
The web white in the sun,
Silver when the sun sets,
Beaded silver by drops of rain, by fogs, by mist...

THE DAY IN ITS PARTS

Every day
Brought rumors of your death.
I believed none of them.

Then your smile
Filled the sky,
And dispersed slowly,
Like clouds...

CONFESSION IN APRIL

Dear Lord, I have sinned against thee.
For I do not love all flowers equally.

For daffodils have come up in my yard instead of tulips.
For I hate their stupid yellow faces

And say they are no better than weeds....

LONG AGO

Long ago, a woman in turret or tower
Let down her hair, and her lover climbed up.
Long ago, I cut my hair.
There are no more towers....

SKI LIFT

I thought all I felt was annoyance, not even anger,
So many plans to change, we were in the wrong country,
On the other side of an ocean, words get changed...

EDITH LEVINE

Snow all day,
And the snow is trackless.
The animals come at night,
Wearing small shoes....
